| Who collects gemstones? Gemstones are a collectible with a surprisingly universal appeal. Collectors are about half male and half female, range from teenagers to senior citizens, and come from the middle-class to the wealthy.
Why collect gemstones? Gemology is a division of geology, so some collectors, affectionately called "rock hounds," are interested in earth science. Others are interested in the use of gemstones in jewelry. Some care about the magical healing and spiritual lore associated with particular gems. Others enjoy the satisfaction of an investment as secure as land or gold... but that can fit in their pocket. Gemstones have been in use for all of these purposes for at least 5,000 years.
Gemstones are part of the material culture of ancient and modern civilizations. And most historical figures, whether Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Napoleon, or today's Elizabeth Taylor, have a fascinating gemstone story associated with them.
